My Hanuman Chalisa by Dev Dutt Patnaik

Untitled.jpgFor most of the Indian Hindus, Hanuman Chalisa as one book which they carry with them or read when stressed out or scared. I am one such person, any time of the day or night, I recite the lines consciously or subconsciously.

My Hanuman Chalisa by Dev Dutt Patnaik is a book in which author has tried to explore the popular Hanuman Chalisa, a book sold in roadside shop near temples. I received the book as a review copy from the Publisher and would like to thank Rupa Publications for the same.

The author mentions he has always wondered what makes this book so popular and he also wonders whether people who read it understand what they are reading as the book is not written in simple Hindi. Hence, he felt the need to explore the book and has named it ‘My Hanuman Chalisa’. He mentions that he wants to expand his truth and the truth of the readers and that he has tried to avoid the academic approach.

This book has been divided into 3 dohas and 40 chaupais like the Hanuman Chalisa. The book starts with the text of the Hanuman Chalisa and is followed by exploration or explanation of the 3 dohas and chaupais.

Each chapter of the book has been named according to a part of the chaupai like the first chapter has been named ‘Why monkey as God’ and this chapter explains the first Chaupai of the book of the Hanuman Chalisa.

The language is simple and the illustrations are beautiful. The author has used glimpses of the Ramayana in explaining the Hanuman Chalisa.

I loved the book.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the book from the publisher in return for my honest review. I have NOT received any monetary compensation for the same.
